Mr. K. Clement Kirk, Pctone, ha* been advised by cablegram that his youngest son, Private Edward Kirk, who went away with the Main Expeditionary Force, died at the Dardanelles from typhoid fever on July 21. Doceased, who was about 23 years of age, and very popular, was born atPetone, and educated at thu local State School and at Wellington College. On finishing his education, ho joined the stall of tho National Bank in Wellington, and afterwards entered tho service of Messrs. Magnus; Sanderson, and Co.', in order to gain an insight into motor mechanics. He was with the firm when he enlisted. The 'important role of Caspard (tho miser) in the Wellington Amateur Operatic Society's cast for "Les Cloches da Corneville"has lieen alotted to Mr. H. G. Shakes, a. promising young Wellington elocutionist. The latest American papers' to hand chronicle tho'death of .Rafael Joseffy, tho celebrated Hungarian pianist and pupil of Liszt. Ho retired from tho concert stage some years ago, and made his homo in America. _ Joseffy, who died from ptomaine poisoning, was 63 years of age. Corporal I H. Davies, of the Sixth Reinforcements, and late of Thos.' Cook and Son's staff, was yesterday presented with a serviceable wristlet watch by bis colleagues. The presentation was made-by the manager,_ Air. Desborough, who wished the recipient "a hot timo and a safe return." Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Sinclair, of Napier, arrived in Wellington by the mail train last evening, en route to tho Old Country. Mr. T. Meredith, well known in the Rissington district, Hawke's Bay, is leaving for England on Friday to join King Edward's Horse, in which ho has keen offered a commission.

By the death of Mr. Peter Coupar M'Ewen, another old identity has been removed from our midst. The late Mr. M'Ewen was born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1838j and came to New Zealand with his. parents in the ship Phoebe in February. 1843. He learned his trade, of baker with the late Mr. Peter Laing, and after many years' service and on. the death of Mr., Laing bought the business and established the firm of M'Ewen and Churchill. The business was carried on successfully for many yeaTS. Finally Sir. Churchill bought out his partner, who retired into private life and resided in Petone. The deceased is survived by his widow, two daughters—Mrs. Powell, of Petone, and Mrs. W. Brown, of Lower Hiitt— and one son, Mr. G. D. M'Ewen, of M'Ewen and Carter, carriers, Petone.

Bandsmen T. O'Brien and T. Shardlow, of the sth Regiment -Band, are leaving for tho front with the Trentliam Regiment. They are to be farewelled by "the band at an early date.. Word has been received that Major J. Getliin Hughes, D.5.0., who went away with thyj .Main. Expeditionary Force on the staff of General Godley, has received his colonelcy, nud is at present Commanding Officer of the Canterbury Battalion during the absence of Colonel Brown, who, after being wounded, was invalided to England. Mr. Sam Perth M'Nab, journalist and solicitor, a resident of Marlborough for over forty years, died in the Picton Hospital on Monday, aged sixty-three. Ho.was- born in Perth, Scotland, and educated at Owen's College, Manchester, graduating at London University. Ho was connected with the newspaper press in Blenheim for some time, but for the greater part of the time which ho spent in that town he practised as a He also lived at Havelock for some years. His wifo died a little over a year ago. He leaves a son (Cap-tain-A. A. M'iVab, of-the 6th Reinforcements) and a; daughter. ■ Mr. J. A. Scott, LL.B., late of the Agricultural Department, was admitted a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court by Mr. Justice Cooper at. Auckland last weok, on the motion of Mr. J. M. Shera. Mr. Scott, who graduated at the Victoria: College last year, is a son of the.late Mr. Alex. Scott, of "Wellington.
