NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glencoe.]

Owners are reminded that acceptances for minor events on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Winter Meeting close on Friday. At the same time final payments must be made for tho Winter Cup and for the Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdles.

Eiccarton has been, visited by fog on more than one occasion recently, and on Several mornings the training operations have been affected in consequence.

Morning and Tim Doolan are the local favourites for tho C.J.C. Grand National Steeplechase, ■ while of the Winter Cup candidates Banksia. and Glenroy are the two most inquired for. It is claimed for Fagot that he has never fallen, either in a raco or in his schooling work. Unfortunately the San Remo gelding is rather deficient in pace. Sixteen young colts and fillies took part in a three-furlon" sprint at the Pakuranga Hunt Clubs, meeting at EUerslie on Saturday. Lady Jack (Carl RosaMiss Jack) and Ritasea. were amongst tho quickest to- get going, but in the run to the post Cultriform and Jllama, displaced Ritasea, Lady Jack, who is a halfsister to Jack Delaval, defeating Cnltriform by a neck, with Juanna close up third. ' Lady Jack was ridden by, B. Deeley. White Cockade has again gone amiss; and his trainer has decided not to persevere with the veteran.. His stable' companion Ladrone, who has been off the scene for some weeks, is to be takon up again after the C.J.C. Grand National meeting at Riccarton. It is understood that when the reduction comes in racing days in Victoria, the V.R.C. will retain all its dates. Alterations will bo made in the fixtures of the V.A.T.C. and the smaller clubs. The New Zealand owner, Mr. J. Hennah, returned from Australia by tho Ulimaroa on Monday. A large contingent of North Island horses will reach Riccarton this morning, and between now and next Monday the training operations should be very interesting. Racing enthusiasts will follow the gallops more closely than ever this year because of the fact that there is no Trentham form to guide them as in the past.
