ATHLETIC STILL UNBEATEN

Fine weather on Saturday permitted of another series of matches being played in connection with the senior Rugby championship. Athletic, who administered a crushing defeat to Wellington at Petone, finished tlie first round with an unbeaten record. PONEKE AND SELWYN. On No. 1 ground at Athletic Park, Poneke had no difficulty in gaining a victory over Selwyn. In the first spell the only score was a try for Poneke by C. Tilyard, Selwyn being 3 points lown at half-time. Brewer, of Poneke, had to retire before the spell ended, having sustained a broken kncccap. Soon after tho resumption of play, Tilyard kicked a penalty goal for Poneke, and later converted a second try scored by C. Tilyard. Further tries were scored by .1. Tilyard, Anderson, and Anstice, but not One of these was converted, the game ending with the score reading: Poneke, 20 points; Selwyn, nil, Mr. F, Larway was referee.

PETONE AND. ORIENTAL. _ Petone defeated Oriental on No. 2 ground, Athletic Park, by a comfortable margin of 15 points. Oriental were unfortunate enough to lose the services of Avery before half-time. That player'sustained a broken, nose, and other facial injuries. Petone led by 6 points to nil in the first spell, as the result of unconverted tries scored by Bolton and M'Ewan. In tho second spell Nicholls potted a goal for Petone, whilo E. Ryan and Anslow scored tries, both of -which were converted by E. Ryan. Sullivan ga : ned a try for Oriental, and this was converted by Kinvig. The game ended: Petone, 20 points; Oriental, 5 points. Mr. G. H. Parkinson was referee.

WELLINGTON AND ATHLETIC, In tho Wellington-Athletic contest at Petone, a stubborn dcfenco was maintained by the former team in the early stages of tho game, and for a period Wellington's prospects looked bright. Athletic, however, gradually warmed up, and in tho second spell had matters practically their own way. The spectators who "barracked", for Wellington then transferred their interests to a minor match, many of them expressing disapproval of' the referee's decision on vital points. Douall kicked a penalty goad, and Francis and Ongley each scored an unconverted try for AVellington. For Athletic A. Wilson, M'Arlie, Church, Madden (2), Paton, Ryan, Blakemore. (3), and Cunningham each crossed Wellington's line, Madden converting in every instance savo two. Francis (Wellington) was forced to "retiro in tine second spell, owing to an injury to his ribs, and battling against heavy , odds, with ono player sliort, AVellington struggled up/to the call of time ■to regain lost ground, but to no .purpose, and the game ended: Athletic, 52—9. Mr. .Mofl'att was tho referee.

PUNIOR MATCHES. Third Class.—St. John's defeated University by 32 to 3. AVoUington College defeated Old Boys, who are leading in the competition, by 4-3 points to 3. l>or College tries wore, scored, by Caulton (4), Perry (2), Welch, Sutherland and Donald: Raleigh converted five and Coulton three. Old Boys' score camo from' a penalty by Austin. Fifth Class.—College A defeated College B by 19 to 5. For tho A team tries were scored by Vial, M'lntyre, Edwards, Carr, and AVakelin.
