Mr. Hughes, Attorney-General, was charged with bungling in making an agreement with'certain.firms regarding the transport of tlio coming wheat crop, without consulting Parliament. He replied that tlio matter was urgent, and that it had been arranged after consulting tlie States Governments. He would stand or fall-by it.

AT NORFOLK ISLAND NEW SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT. (Rec. July' 30, 9.50 p.m.) Sydney, July 30. 'An ordinance which has been posted up on the Courthouse at Norfolk Island abolishes the present executive «is from July 31, and provides a council of six elected and six appointed members. who shall elect a president and vice-president from their own number. The president will receive £20 a year from the Island revenue. The franchise has been extended to women over twenty-one.

In the Federal Senato, Senator Bakhap said Australia, and America, had vast interests in tlie Pacific, and he therefore urged a peace alliance. Senator Lynch advocated the cultivating of the closest. trade and .other relations, for they might need America's assistance in the hour of trouble which may come. A promise was given to bring before the Treasurer a suggestion to-approach tlie American money market for an Australian loan other than for war purposes. ,

A STATE WORKS MANAGER'S RESIGNATION. ALLEGED POLITICAL INTER,FER- ; ENCE. . Perth, July 30. Sir. 'Angwin, Minister for Works, states that Mr. Davies's resignation of the managership of the State Implement Works, 'on the ground that Ministerial, political, and union interference waß so rife that his position was a mere farce, was due to .the fact that accounts regarding the manufacture of machines had not been properly kept. Mr. Davies replies that this is a subterfuge; the friction was the outcome of his refusal to dismiss three of the best men because they were Liberals.

FEDERAL WAR TAX. HINTED TAX ON INCOMES FROM £150 UPWARDS. Melbourne, • July 30. ■ Cabinet is stili considering the quostion of war taxation. - It is stated that there will be a tax on incomes from personal exertion above £150 ranging from threepence to five shillings 'in the pound, and on incomes from property raging from tenpence to five shillings.
