She says: "My boy is still fighting, and is well. 'Wo liad a letter from, him the other day,, written in tho trenches. My eldest hoy has 'enlisted, and lias been accepted. Ho was down last week to say good-bye before going into camp. Thoy simply must go. Colin is still waiting, and hopes to be accepted at Christmas. We had a letter from Graco (a nurso) last week, posted as soon as sho reached London, but she did not then know where sho would be going." This mother, who is thus giving threo sous and a daughter to the service of tho Empire, lost another son in tho South African War Eome years ago. Fellding Notes. There was a lame and appreciative audience to greet the Chermavsky trio in tho Lyceum last week. Among those present were: Mesdames Willis, Haggitt, Miles, Luxmore, Wheeler/ Barton, .Richmond, Kavanagh, Guy (Wellington), Stewart, Strang (Palmerston), Walker, Redraayne, Shannon, Wilson, Jones, Misses M'Beth, Shannon, Lethbridgo, Walpole, Richmond, Walker, Ilaybittle, Waymouth, and many others. Misses Kirton (2) have returned l from Wellington. Miss Inues-Jones has returned from Wellington, having passed "her nursing examination. On Saturday afternoon a Red Cross tea was held at Mrs. Gordon Elliott's liouse, tho guests all taking their knitting. Among those present were: Mesdames Willis, Gorton, Woollams, Barton, Walker, Remington-Jones, Hitchings, Guy, Blaxall, Fitzherbert, Bull, Myers, Hoult, Broad, Halliday, Wheeler, and others. Sirs. Blaxall has returned from -Wellington. A meeting to consider the organising of a Women's National Reserve in Wet lington is to be called shortly. A preliminary meeting, called by' Mrs. Porter, wit© of Colonel Porter, Commandant of the. National Reserve, was held yesterday afternoon to consider what should be dono'in the matter, and also to outline the scope of its operations.
The Sydney Street, Schoolroom, which has undergone the transformation of bein<* turned into a soldiers' room, should present many attractions to the men in. from Trentham. With bright fires burning, easy chairs, boks, magazines, periodicals, and newspapers, writing tables, and facilities for smoking, home comforts should not be altogether lost sight of, and in addition there will be light refreshments provided. On week days the, room will bo open from 6 p.m. and on. Sundays from 4 o'clock in tho afternoon. Many generous offers and contributions liavo been received, evidencing the support which the movement lias met with from all sides. The room ivill probably be opened on Friday.
Tho St. Peter's Young Women's Club held its annual concert on' Monday evening, the proceeds this year being in aid of the poor relief 'of Wellington, A most' enjoyablo programme was pro-ec-nted-to a' large and .appreciative audience; After the conclusion of the: musical items some members of the club gave a charming little comedietta, which was_ most amusing and well, rendered, the titlo being "Two Rooms to Let."- Amongst thoso present wero: Mesdames A. R. Atkinson, Perry, Richards, Dun, Clingberg, Misses Hogg (3), Clingberg, Robinson, Trilford, Luke, Dun, Messrs. Perry, Prober!;, Trilford, Willie Dun, and many others.
Owing to destruction by fire of the Worser Bay Kiosk,- the dance which ivas to have been held there this evening in aidof the Wounded Soldiers' ; Fund will instead be beld ; in the Swimming Club house.
Miss Paterson (Otago), her sister, rmd her aunt, Mrs. Raphael, aro staying at "Balmoral." Miss Paterson has taken a house at Otaki, and she and her sister intend living there.
' Nurse Frances Shirtcliffe, formerly of Nelson , and Wellington, who left, for England a few months ago, is now nursing in France. She went across under the War Office as one of Queen Alexandra's nurses, and the hospital in which she is now nursing was formerly an. old convent.
Alcock's Ladles' Billiard Diner Cham* pionshfp. The finals were played last night, and tho mailt'honour was scoured by Mrs. Nagel, who contested the deciding game with Mrs: Chant. The semi-final was played between Mrs. Nagel and Mrs. Tucker. Other »amos were: Mrs. Chant beat Mrs. Girdlostone and Miss Penman ; Mrs. Tucker beat Miss E: Stevens, and Mrs. Nagel beat Mrs. Tucker. Some very close finishes were witnessed, and many serviceable .breaks were made. After the games were finished, the secretary, for Messrs. Alcock and Co., Ltd., presented the Championship Cup and the prizes won in tho Ladies' Handicap, the winners of which were Mrs. Chant, Mrs. Lockwood, and Mrs. Porter for the highest break by a non-winner. Messrs. Nagel and Lockwood. on behalf of the lady competitors thanked Messrs. Alcock and Co., Ltd., for the attention and consideration they had shown. Wellington can now hold it is believed, claim tho honour of having tho first amateur lady champion, billiardist of the world.
Mr. Charles Rhodes (Auckland), consular representative for Italy in that City, and Mrs. Rhodes, left 'last week on a visit to Australia.
Dr. Emily Siedeberg, M.8., B.Sc., tt'lio left New Zealand to take up war work in Europe by tho Makura on Juno 14, arrived in Glasgow on July 20.
