THE RIGHT TO BALLOT. . - Three remits dealing with-tho question' of : "Land for soldiers" .ajjpeared on the order paper'at tlio Farmers' Union Conference yesterday. Tv.l) were from Wellington and-one from Marlborough. 'Mr. H. A. NivenS; in moving the first remit, .to give soldiers ' first preference at land'ballots, suggested it would be a suitable thing for; the present conference to endorse the scheme. • ,Mr. G. Gardner (North, Canterbury) said that .many soldiers knew nothing about the land,'and therefore it would be better if they were assured of being reinstated in their old positions.. .Delegates generally expressed themselves' strongly in .favour. gf the spirit of the remits and considered that any soldier who was fighting for. his. country should be given the opportunity of taking part in every J hallot through an accredited representative. . Tho first two remits were, carried Unanimously, and the third was withdrawn as it was practically identical with the second.
