'GOING FOR THE TURK'
PRAISE FOR OUR MEN WHAT GENERAL CODLEY THINKS. "One cannot stir hero without' the Chance of meeting ,a shrapnel or a, sniper's bullet," wrote General Godley to the Defence Minister on Juno 2. "They talk of tho casualties in France, but I do not fancy that at any time they have been anything like what they have been here, in comparison to tho numbers of men engaged. In my division alone, which landed 8543 strong, I have had 4250 casualties, and the Australian division proportion is, I believe, higher. But we manage to keep going all right, and enjoy this delightful Climate, and our daily walks round tlio trenches as far as we can. "These New Zealawlers and Australians have fought splendidly, and are never so happy as when they are going for the Turk with the hayouet. Tho Turks fight well, and it is the greatest mistake to underrate them or not to think that they, are a pretty formidable enemy. But I hope that, all the same, tho Reinforcements coming may enable us soon to make a start for Constantinople."
