PATRIOTIC FUNDS

PitOVINCIAL CONFERENCE TO-DAY

| The Provincial Conferenco summoned [).v the' Mayor of Wellington for this afternoon, 'with the object of creating one fund only for tho whole of the Wellinfftoii military district in couuection with funds subscribed for wounded soldiers and sailors, is an important one. Theultimate aim of nearly all concerned in to-day's conference) is, as far as pan be gathered, the establishment of a National Fund that' will operate from the Three Kings, to. Stewart Island,, but so far conferences summoned with that end in view have proved inconclusive, if not abortive. They have, however, served the useful purpose of; a free interchange of ideas oil the subject of tho pooling and administration of funds. • With a small proportion of wounded men already back in tho country it is considered essential that some scheme that will prevent overlapping and duplication of clerical work should 1 be adopted at onco. The proposal to bq put before the conference this afternoon \yill be to form a .Provincial Fund, leaving a loophole to join in a National Fund if the same bacomes established; s 'A further conference to discuss the National- Fund proposal will be held iu Wellington to-morrow.
