FIGHT FOR WARSAW
DESPERATE BATTLE STILL RAGING FRENCH SUCCESS IN THE VOSGES ATTACKS ON THE'BRITISH LIE • GERMAN SUBMARINE ' CAPTURED -AMERICA'S WARNING BITTER RECEPTION IN - GERMANY Severe fighting around Warsaw is reported tc-day. The Germans claim to have crossed the Narew along a considerable front, but the Russian communiques tell a different story. The Trench have scored another success in the Vosges, and the British in Flanders have also been busily occupied, according to a report by Sir John French, but the events/along the Western front are of local rather than of general importance. The Germans are stated to have constructed strategic light railways behind their lines in the West, and in preparation, it is believed, for a desperate attempt to reach Calais. Events on the Italian front are hastening the fall of Gorizia. In the Mediterranean a Ger- , man submarine has been captured while attempting an attack on an Italian ship. There is little news from Gallipoli, save an Athens message confirming the suspicion that the Turks are planning a big attack on the Allies', front. Diplomacy is busy in the Balkans; Turkey has ceded territory to Bulgaria, and the latter has sent its representative to Berlin for the purpose, it is presumed, of negotiating a loan; and Rumania awaits a decisive stroke by the Allies before deciding the question of intervention. The German Press has read the United States Government's solemn warning with bitter feelings.
