CUTTING DOWN EXPENSES. . , At last week's meeting of the Westport Harbour Board the Finance Committee made Eeveral recommendations with a view to securing economy, soys an exchange. Tho chairman , stated that the strained financial position, compelled tho laying up of the.' dredge Rubi Seddon, while the coal-boring staff should bo dispensed with, and tenders called for boring. After the recommendations had been approved, members discussed the steps to bo taken.to 'bring about tho' proposed retrenchments. It was' agreed that a month's notice should be given to the Rubi Seddon's officers and crew. The harbour, expenses were shown to, be £3000 per year. Concerning the liarbour staff, it was decided to, waive tho question, of giving notice and enter into the matter of reducing the staff. . The Delphic, which'has been considerably delayed by bad. weather at Wanganui roadstead, will make Waitara her next port of call. Tho F. and 8. chartered steamer La Blanco, will load at Wanganui and Waitara this week. r . i The Manuka, is expected'to arrive from Sydney direct about noon to-day. Sho will berth at the Queen's Wiharf, and go on to Lyttelton this evening. ■Before visiting Wellington next Wednesday from Greymouth. , the • Ngakuta will discharge at Lyttelton. . .The ferry steamer Maori will be docked at Lyttelton next' Saturday for cleaning and painting. She will resume running to Wellington the same evening. During Thursday's heavy flood in tho Wanganui River one of the Harbour Board's punts broke adrift and was washed out to sea. Mariners/trading to that port should keep a good look-out, as the punt is thought to bo a menaco to navigation'. ' ~. '
