: 9 THE WELLINGTON CLUB. There was a large attendance at the rooms of the Wellington Chess.Club in the Y.M.C.A. Building on Saturday evening for tho opening of tho 1915 season, which took tho form of a match—Bowlers (from all local greens) v, tho club's team. Some 38 players wero present, of whom 30 having been previously paired, were able to get through 15 of the 35 games scheduled. Tho 20 outstanding games may bo played at any time in the next four weeks; they include tho fixture between the two captains, viz., Barnes and W. E. Mason, which had to bo postponed, as the former i£ laid up with influenza,. At 10 p.m. tho club team had a lead of four games, .but the Bowlers came with a rush in the last hour,-and when play ceased for tho day the club was only two games , ahead, their tally being Si to the Bowlers' 'GJ. As more than half the pairings have still to be accounted for the Bowlers will have plenty of opportunities in the next four weeks to overtake the club. team. A feature of tho evening's play was tho even nature of the games, all of which were a credit to both winners and losers, and showed that the pairing committee had been markedly successful in their grading of two large and well-balanced teams. Wins for the club were scored by Messrs. Fouhy, Burgess, Mouat (formerly of Duriedin), Topp, Dalrymple, Coulter, Rawnsley, and Frethey, and for tho Bowlers by Messrs. Still, Purchas, H. J. Thompson, Salek, Arden, and Grenfell. The game, Fell v. Ward, ended in a draw.by perpetual cheek, the former making the most of a positional advantage that compensated him for lost. material. THE NGAIO CLUB. The filial round of tho Ngaio Chess Club's annual handicap tournament wasi played last week, tho result being that no fewer than three players liavo tied for the first prize—Messrs. Wild, Carman, and E. E. Hicks, each , finishing up with the good score of 9 wins and 2 losses. A triangular play-off is thus necessary. There was also a tie for fourth place, Messrs. Topp and W- Hills each scoring 7 wins and 4 -losses'. The latter won the play-off. Messrs. Green, Brown, and Banks were also well to tho fore, and on several occasions pushed the leaders very haid for their wins.
