FIFTH REGIMENT BAND

Tho annual general meeting of tho sth Regiment _ Band was Tield on Thursday evening, Bandsman H. Oakes being in the chair. Tho following officers were electedDeputy-Conductor, Sergeant B. Currey; secretary, Bandsmail H. Hull; treasurer, Bandsman W. Christenson; conunittee, Corporal J. Cannody, Bandsmen H. James, D. Coylo, H. Carroll, E. Elliott; music committee, Bandmaster H. M'Comish, Deputy-bandmastor Currey, Bandsmen J. Glennie; librarians, Bandsmen H. Grcig and — Rolfe. During the evening Bandmaster M'Comish gave a brief skctch of the progress of the band during the past three j'ears, which has been . very rapid. "From a very small beginning," he said, "tho band has now become of the the best in Wellington, and includes in its Tanks some of the finest players in the DoTuinion. It is intended that a series of concerts will bo given, tho first in a few weeks' time, when tho public will be given anopportunity of hearing the band. During the rccent Carnival tho band assisted on many occasions, and has also taken part in all tho farewell parades of tho New Zealand troops leaving for tho front. It also has tho distinction of being the first band in tho history of tho Dominion to leave these Shores on aotive service; and, at Samoa, was probably the first band in the British Empire to play the National Anthem when tho British flag supplanted that of Germany."

Tho Petone Corps of the Salvation Army celebrated the 27th anniversarj yesterday. Staff Captain Newbold, of Na tional Headquarters Staff, delivered three addresses in the morning. In the after noon the. Staff Captain presented new col ours to Ensign Seaman, Corps Officer who handed them over to Colour-Sergeant Herberts for the use in the corps. At the evening service tlie Staff Captain based his remarks on "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, to-day, and forever." Mrs. W. B. Gough, 30 years a soldier of the Army, S.M. Waito. Y.P.D.M, M'Callum, Bandmaster M'Callum, and Eecruiting Sergeant Gough each spoke, and Mrs. Newbold sang. >
