Staff-Sergeant Clinlker, in his' evidence, said there was not enough rifles for the recruit?. Ho said lie was prepared to answer any questions, but if ho answered too many and too freely later on ho might bo a sufferer.' Mr. Justice Rich suggested that he might take tho witness's answers privately.
Sergeant Chalkcr said -he could not help him,- as any evidence detrimental to the head of tho Department could leak out.
Counsel said ho was definitely instructed by the Department to give an assurance that there would bo no victimisation in any way.
■ Witnesses' subsequent evidence was confined to a few harmless questions.
Jlr. justico Rich presented an interim report, which suggests an improvement in the latrines, increases' in medical and commandant's staffs, better supply of hot water, better : arrangemens for cooking, including medical examination of amateur cooks, and insistence of their cleanliness.
