RISE IN THE HUTT RIVER
Throughout yesterday the Hutt River continued to rise, reaching a height of over lift- above summer level. Beyond: tho washing away of the gorgo at the Lower Hutt Bridge, and several paddocks in the valley becoming inundated, no damage is reported. With the cessation of rain,- however, the river rapidly assumed a more normal appearancc.
WAIRARAPA STREAMS FLOODED.
Steady warm" rain has fallen in the Wairarapa during tho past few days, and on Tuesday morning the Waiohine was over the road, and the Maungaterai was bank and bank. .
Telegraphic communication; between Wellington and Auckland was interrupted for several hours yesterday, and there was also some trouble on the Welling-ton-Napier route. A tree-fell across the lino between Ohakune and Taumarunui; carrying away one of the poles, and no messages could, be sent to or received from Auckland by that route from 9 a.m. until nearly 3 o'clock yesterday, afternoon. Work'as usual is now proceeding, and the accumulation of messages in Wellington for Auckland district is, being rapidly cleared off. But for the' lino from Taranaki to Auckland the latter city would have been quite isolated so far as telegraphic communication was concerned- The trouble on tho Wellington-Napier line was caused by a motor-car colliding with a tele-, graph post north of Napier, causing a delay of about an hour and a 'half i£ transmission of messages. The Soutl Island lines worked fairly well t-hrougl the storm.
