Allen) to tho questions put by Mr. A. M:Mye'rs, M.P.,"'as to the 'desirability' of ■ jcompiling a national register, and in- ! creasing our Expeditionary Force to •50,000 men. Mr. Allen answered as •follows*—(1) The question, of. tho .compilation of a national register of males of serviceable ago in; the Dominion is /.under'consideration.(2) It is not considered possible to: increase our Expeditionary Force-to fifty ; thousand' men, and--to maintain it m the field, lteaneiriberiiig that infantry requires 'rein-forcements..-of- 180. per - cent, per annum, it must be noted that the honourable member's suggestion means 50,000 men now and a further 90,000 men as reinforcements within_ twelve months, a total of 140,000 men in twelve months. If the -war continues for more than twelve months there would be a proportionate increase as long as tho war lasted, if New Zealand complied with the wishes of the "War Office in the {Batter of reinforcements.
