A SHORT MEMORY
MEMBER'S FUNNY QUESTION. A joke that was tried on the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon by Mr. T. M. Wilford recoiled awkwardly on tho joker. A case had been brought under the notice of the Defence Minister of a summons to attelid drill having been sent to the address of a young man at Ckristchurch who had left New Zealand with' the Main Expeditionary Force, and who had actually been killed in action on April 26. Mr. Wilford then asked: "Why was' it that Robert M'Niven, who was chosen to act as guard over the. Germans at Somes Island was, while doing duty there, brought before the Court for having failed to attend drill?" . Mr. Massey: When ■ was that? (Laughter.) • Mr; Wilford: Since the war began. An honourable member: Last year! Mr. Allen:- .What was- the date? (Laughter.) Mr. Wilford: I don't know what the date was.
Mr. Massey I know., It was in October, 1914. (Laughter.)' Mr. Wilford had forgotten, no doubt, that he asked tho very same question in almost the same, words during last session' of Parliament.
