Hughes (AttorneyGeneral) states that the wholesale price of sugar in tho various States is: Brisbane and) Sydney. £25 10s.: Melbourne. £25 12s. 6d.; Adelaide, £25 17s. 6d.; Perth, £26. Arrangements for distribution are left in the hands of the Colonial Sugar Company. The retail price in all States is now 3d. per pound 1 , which is not likely-to yield any profit outside Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

This has somewhat relieved the famine in these commodities. Giving evidence before tho Commodities Commission, in favour of an increase in the price of oatmeal, Mr. Scott, manager of Messrs. Parsons Bhotliers, stated that foreign oats showed 40 per cent, more liusk and waste, and also 10 per cent, more dust and rubbish,' than thio' New Zealand product.
