CRIME IN THE ISLANDS
MURDERS IN SAMOA 'AND FIJI.. IBy Telegraph.-Pr. •- Auckland, July 19. News of a murder in Samoa was brought bj; passengers on the steamer Tofua, whicli arrived in Aucklandyesterday. The victim was a coolie employed on a plantation some distances from Apia, but wlien the steamer left the police had not identified the author of the crime." The man had been , attacked with an axe, and his body was horribly mutilated. During the morning on which the man was killed all. the other coolies employed on the plantation were in Apia, having been, summoned there as ■ witnesses in a Court case, so that it is considered that the prospective abssnce of the murdered mail's usual companions was taken into consideration by the author of the crime.
News was also received by the Tofua; that a murder was committed on the morning of July 8 by an Indian at Somabula, in the Fiji Group. The victim, a girl of about fifteen years, was shot. The murderer then paraded the neighbourhood with a plentiful supply of ammunition. A party of police left Suva immediately for the scene of the crime, and it was afterwards learned that the Indian had been shot.
