The i Auckland University College Council decided yesterday to appoint Mr. J. P. Grossmann, M.A., to the Chair of History and Economy,' which was recently created, at a salary of £700 per annum—Press Association.

Mr. R. L. B. Gall, of Calcutta, has been appointed honorary New Zealand representative in India.

A private cable message received hero yesterday contained news of the death at Sydney of Mr. W. T. Quinton, of Lambton Quay.

Mr. Joseph Wilfrid White, son of Mr. Kinross White, of Napier, has joined the Motor Transport Section of the Royal Naval Air Service, and has been placed in charge of one of their best motor-cars, which he drovo down to Southampton from London. He got his commission in less than a week after he gave his narao in at the War Office, and was in France on Juns 3, under eight weeks after leaving New Zealand, his uniform having to be sent after him.

Private G. C. Johns, 4th Field Ambulance, who has been on duty at Samoa since August last, returns to Wellington to-day by tho Main Trunk express. Captain Post, of tho Tutanekai, received word yesterday morning of tha death, in a private hospital in Auckland on Saturday, of his chief officer, Captain J. W. M'Kenzie. Deceased, who was about 36 years of age, was a native of Auckland, and before joining tho Tutanekai in April, 1913, was in tho service of the Union Company. Ho was chief officer of several of the company's vessels, and afterwards commanded the Haupiri, tho Rosamond, and the Squall. Six months ago be was sent to Auckland to act as Government marine surveyor there in place of Captain Dykes, who had had to enter a' private hospital. Captain M'Konzie himself had been feeling unwell for tho past year, but was able to attend to his duties until a few.days ago. ■

Mr. Frank St. Leger, who visitedfuw Zealand with Miss Maud Allan and the Cherniavskys last year, is the pianist of tho Rickards'* Tivola Follis Company, now appearing at the Opera House. Ho is to accompany Madame Mclba to America in a few wee Ira as her accompanist.

Mr. William Douglas, who was manager of His Majesty's Theatre for some time, is now a director of the 1' uller Vaudeville Company.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Plimmor and Mr. and Mrs. Winter Hall leave for Sydney by the Moeraki on Thursday.

Mr. T. R. Allen, Masterton, agent of the Public Trustee, has been appointed Deputy-Official Assignee in place of Mr. G. W. Sellar, who has been actingtfcputy for some months past. •

Mr. Quentin Donald, of Featherston, has been elected unopposed as president of tho Masterton A. and P. Association for the coining year. Messrs. J. C. M'Killop and C. F. Vallance have been elected vice-presidents.

Mr. H. G. Stringer, at present secretary of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, has been appointed manager of the Oroua Freezing Company and is to take up his duties in November.— Press Association.

Mr. R. Hall, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, is reported to be progressing' satisfactorily.

Mrs. Arthur Petherick, daughter of the late Mr. George Gray, formerly of the Post Office, died At Masterton yesterday, at the age of 45 years. Sho leaves a husband, one eon and one daughter. .
