BUILDING HOMES.
Sir,—Owing to the plentit'ude of i labour and' a corresponding competitive keenness,. the cost of construction has declined. Surely there is wisdom in I building now under such favourable conditions, for no one can positively , say licw long they will remain so. Probably for a very short time. Public confidence is being gradually restored b.v the infiltration of cheery'war news, and so soon as it appreciably strengthens building is certain to return to its former levels as regards cost and skilled labour scarcity. Therefore the time to build is now, while builders are cutting tenders owing .to the exceptional keeniiess of competition, and while tho sur- . plus of labour allows of a mora satisfactory selection of skilled tradesmen. A building investment mado now is likely to be 10 per cent, better a few months lience. Now is the time to use wisdom of getting in early with that hung-up building investment, There is nothing to justify uncertainty about the building of houses. Investors should remember tlio war ban only end one way, and those who delay their proposals for building till after the war will find that tho work will"have to be dono at an enhanced figure. People who desire to build would not get a better opportunity tliau new. T.cannot seo any justification ft
any pessimism. Confidence, after all, is the foundation of success in any sphere. Everyone in tho building trade must got a' move on. "Why should I risk my money," says tho faint-hearted commercial man, "in plant and materials when 1 have no guarantee that I can make my usual profits." What would they think if tlio brave New Zealand soldier who is fighting was to say, "I havo no guaranteo that I shall bo'mentioned in dispatches."—l am, etc., W. ,W. CORBETT*
