FIRE ON AN OIL STEAMER
A SUSPICIOUS OUTBREAK. ' (By Telegraph.— l'voss Association.! Auckland, July 15. Fire was discovered at 11.30 this morning in the forehold of the steamer Oaldegrovq, loaded with case oil from Philadelphia. _ The hold, which was half full of beiizoliiiA, had iiot been worked this morning, 'but half an hour before, some of tho crew had been working below. The hatch was left' open for ventilation, and a little smoke was seen coming out. Two leads of the ship's hose were taken down to hold the fire till tho brigado arrived. ■ The firo was found nmong a quantity of paper and tow between the outer row of,cases and the ship's side, which had evidently beon placed there with intent to start a blaze.
The. outbreak was extinguished when tho ends of nine cases had been charred. Had the blaze progressed much further the ship would probably have been blown «!>• ,
