PRICE OF POTATOES
LIKELIHOOD OP A DECLINE. Despite tli® embargo placed on the export of potatoes prices still remain firm at from £71Cs. to -£E per ton, and fairly large quantities said to have been ordered before the prohibition was imposed-continue to go forward to Australia. A local merchant who deals in potatoes states that there is absolutely no justification for.tho present price;?, as the season, particularly in tho Manawatu and Wanganui districts, as well, as in the south, was a. very good one, and disease among tho crops was remarkable for its absence. Still, many of the growors wero holding stocks, and thereby keeping up prices, but, if he was any judge, tho time' was not far distant when there would be a sudden collapse, and in support of that statement said, that last week in Wellington potatoes were almost, unsaleable et £8 per ton. Tho shortage in Australia had been mado the lover for stiffoning tho price here, but with exports barrod, ( and the faot that Australia's own crop would be available within the next six . or seven weeks, there would not oven be that excuse for holding on to stocks in New Zealand.
