ARBOR DAY
SOME PATRIOTIC TREE-PLANTING. • .Though a cliill blast from tho south smoto the precipitous flanks of the 'l'iiiakori Hills, yesterday morning, there was some. good work dono by way of practically celebrating Arbor Day. .The council's staff did a good bit of planting on tlio hill-side abovo Grant Road, and there. His Worship the Mayor planted a juvenilo karaka and Mrs. Luke an Australian wattle; with the hope that they_ would "grow in beauty side by side" in a manner symbolic of the unity and good spirit which had existed between New' Zealanders and Australians in the far-flung battle line., In planting his tree, tlio Mayor made a feeling reference to the recent death of Mr. John M'Pherson, the City Forester. Ho also, referred in complimentary terms to the excellent work that I ; was being done by tho 'Reserves Committee. Trees were also planted by the v City Engineer'(Mr. W. H. Morton), the chairman of-the Reserves Committee. (Mr. Frost), Mrs. Frost, Councillor' ■L. M'Konzie, and Mr. J. C. 'Webb j (headmaster of tho Normal School). J Leaving the bleak mountain side, the party , proceeded to tho Botanical Gardens, where trees were planted by the' Mayor and Mayoress. .The H0n5..,0. Samuel and W. C. IT. Carncross, ' M.L.C.'s, spoke, in praiee of the foresight': which had been displayed in preserving and -beautifying, such , a naturally beautiful spot, as' tlio Botanical Gardens.' •" : '
: At the" Roseneath "School, the two senior iglrls.Were entrusted frith. the task of planting a special tree in tho school "rounds in honour ;of. tho Red .Cross Brigade working at the front, and the two senior boys planted a treo in honour of the teachers and "old boys" of the Roseneath School who were serving at, the front. . Speeches appropriate, to the occasion'were made by Mr. Robert Darroch (headmaster) and Messrs. Morrison and Van Borssum, of the School Committee. After these little ceremonies were over general planting prooeeded apace on either side of the school. '
j At Brooklyn School the • teachers and scholars Assembled to celebrate tho day and plant some trees'.' There was a big muster, and three trees were planted, one in commemoration of "Old Boys." one for "Absent Soldiers," and one for tho "Red Cross." The gathering was addressed by Mr. J.i 8., Hopkirk, headmaster, and Mr. A. J. "White, secretary of the committee.
