DEATH ON THE APARIMA
PRIVATE BURIED AT SEA'. "The Maunganuian," issued by, the soldiers of the .Fifth Reinforcement's, which came-to hand by yesterday's mail, states that John Joseph Merrick, a' private' in the A.S.C., died from meningitis on board the ApaTima, at 7.-10 p.m. on Juno 20. The news was received on this Maunganui and tho Tahiti at the early hours of Monday morning. At 10 a.m. the three transports paused in their course across- the Great Australian Bight, arid tho last respects were paid to the dead. - All were drawn up at ..attention on tho 'decks of the vessels, and as the clear clarion notes ot tho "Last Post" sounded over tho .expansive waters, the waves closed over the shrouded form. Tho vessels moved-for-' ward once more,'and that most solemn of all burials—a'burial at sea—was over. 1
