THE MEDICAL PROFESSION AND THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

Sir, —In .your editorial comments on Saturday you appear to assume that it is competent for Dr. Valintinc to con"trol tlie medical professioJi, and tlio Hon. Mr. • Alloji and tho Hon. Mr. Rhodes seem to have the samo mistaken impression. Sinco when was Dr. Valin T tine the head of the medical profession in New Zealand? Tho' Medical Association represents the views of the doctors, and Dr. Valintinc is not oven a member of tho association. - Tho doctors here value their independence, and will never allow thomsolvos to bo represented, guided, much less controlled, by the Health Department. The officers of that' Department have their own duties to perform, and only corrio into indirect contact with tho profession in tho notification of infectious diseases., They have 110 clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. We will not have a Civil Servant to rule over us'. I trust tho Ministers referred to 'will not uue&WQ ibat Dr, .Valßtius iL

acting for the medical profession in tho present crisis, or at any other time — I am, etc., \ ' A WELLINGTON DOCTOR. July 11, 1915. [Our'correspondent, wo fear, is under ,i misapprehension as to the powers we attribute to Dr. Valintine. It is natural that as head of tho Health Department Ministers should .consult Dr. V-alintino in. a matter affecting tho service that may be required from tho medical profession; but before taking action tho Government would, wo assume. as a matter of course, consult tho exccutivo of tho British Medical Association. It. is possible that the association should have been consulted ere this; but' is tho present _ a time for disputation on nice points, of ■etiquette?] I
