NOW READY FOR SEA. , The Hospital Ship Maheno, which is to leave Wellington this a'fternoon for-the Mediterranean, was inspected yesterday morning., by Brigadier-General A. W. Robin, who; was very pleased with the manner in which the vessel has' been fitted out for; its important mission. . During the morning the Ambulanco' men who aro accompanying the' ship were paraded on deck, and subsequentiy the officers -arid men wore ■ photographed in groups on: the'wharf. During tho afternoon the .scene on the King's -Wharf: was one of great ac-i tivity.' _ His Excellency the Governor arrived in uniform at about 3 p.m'., and-a few minutes later inspected the ship's staff, tho men wearing the big brown helmets that will bo such a necessary part of: their,'equipment diiringthe summer months in the Mediterranean.; ■' Having inspected the -men, Lord Liverpool once more inspected the ship from end to end, and chatted with' the . officers. •-' In - the meantime the oranes were kept busy hoisting on* board slings of cases and bales, timber,' sacks' of vegetables, bundles of : new canvas and rattan deck-chairs, etc. During' tho day two pianos were , placed on board to enliven the trip and provide musical'solace for the wounded in the future. Bakers':carts arrived packed with sweet-smelling new bread, and after 4 o'clock the-Post Office motor lorries thuiidered'down the wharf piled high with sacks-of newspaper mails consigned to Egypt for the boys at the front, '■ 4 After His Excellency's departure the public were allowed another opportunity of inspecting tho ship, which was rapidly assuming apple-pie order. . Each cot is now furnished with its full equipment. a substantial springy mattress, two pillows, two blankets, and a quilt, neatly folded, - Amidst' tho rush of workmen, arid busy ambulanco men, looking straiigo under the shadeof their "vorandahed" helmets,- aflash of a iiurso's grey and scarlet uniform was caught hero arid, there; tho vessel's chaplains were busy arranging their belongings in deck-cabins; Colonel tho Hon. Dr. Collins extremely busy with his final medical arrangements.; and tho energetic Adjutant had a worcl of di- - rec'tion for ovoryorio who needed it, arid not a moment to spare for anyone who was not on business bent.
