ASTRONOMICAL' SECTION MEETS. At a meeting of the Astronomical Section of the Philosophical Society, held in t-hd'Museum last night, ail interesting paper entitled "The Seasonal Variations in the Duration of Twilight," was read by Professor D. M. Y. Sommerville, M.A., D.Sc., F.R.S., : Edin-. hurgh. 'Mr.' A. C. Gilford took the chair at the meeting and there was a largo attendance of members. - .■ The.lecturer at-the outset explained that twilight was due to the presence of small particles in the air; He.described the manner iiy which twilight varied according to latitude: and to tho seasons of the year. The lecturer also introduced an original generalisation concerning twilight for any planets, atmosphere or season. At the close of his .lecture Professor Sommerville,'showed an instrument by which the duration of twilight could be determined and which also had a practical mathematical use. The lecture was illustrated and elaborated, with a number of interesting lantern slides.' • A number of question's were put to the looturer and at the oonclusion of .the meeting he was accorded, on tho motion of tho chairman, a \oto of thanks. . :
