ANGLICAN SYNOD
THE WELLINGTON DIOCESE WOMEN AND THE VOTE. The Wellington Diocesan Synod resumed its sittings yesterday afternoon, tlio Bishop of Wellington (Dr. T. H. Sprott) presiding.. The Rev. 'C. H. Isaacson had given notice to move: —"That in the opinion of this Synod tlio time has arrived to give women the right of voting at parish meetings, and .requests the Bight Rev. the President to bring this resolution before the General Synod." Beforo speaking to the proposal, tlio irover said that if, .in view of the changed aspect of things as compared, with last year, it was the general feeling that tho present was not a fitting time to discuss such a question, he would he quite willing to withdraw the motion. As the feeling of the meeting could not be gauged on the voices, a division was taken, and, as a result of the voting, the motion, was withdrawn. Now Parochial District. Mr. W. J. Gaudin moved:—"That the boundary of the parish of St. l Mark be altered to exclude that portion lying generally to the north and east of a line drawn from Clyde Quay along tho north-eastern boundary of Town Acre 300 to and along the south-eastern boundaries of Sections '25, 26, 27. 28, and 29, to Town Acre 388, thence along the north-eastern boundary of Town Acre 388 to Oriental Terrace and Moeller Street, thence along Moeller Street, Shannon Street, and Palliser' Road to Section 1, thence along south-western boimary of Section 1 to Mount Victoria Reserve, therico by a straight line to tho signal station on Mount Victoria." 1 The mover explained that tho object oi . the proposal was to create a ;new parochial district, with the churchroom at. Roseneath as the church. At-pre-sent Roseneath required the attention of a soparate clergyman, was practically a separate district with all the organisation thereof, ( and would be selfsupporting. He mentioned, however,that- the parish of St. Mark had.guaranteed a. subsidy of £80 for the first year, vto. be afterwards reduced by £10 per year until the subsidy ceased l to exist. "f- • ' - Mr. W. F. Ward, who seconded tho motion, stated .that the vicar of St. Mark's was in favour, of the separation of Roseneath. The motion was carried unanimously. Services at the Seaside. The Rev. C. H. Isaacson moved i— "That this Synod emphasises the groat importance of the maintenance of regular services during tlie summer season at the popular seaside resorts, and urges on all the importance yof helping this work. That the following be a committee to assist the respective vicars where help is required: Tlio Rev. A. M. Johnson, the Rev. li. Watson, the Rov. W. Fancourt, the Rev. G. ,Y. Woodward, Mr. R. L. Button, and'the mover,' with pmver to a-dd'to their number." .
Referring to the very groat number of people going to the seaside rosorts m summer, the Rev. Mr. Isaacson said tho qnestion.«.which presented itself was: Has th<2 Christian Church a message to those people, while they aro there 011 holidays or not? He maintained tho Church' hatl a message and that was that the Christian Church did not allow nf any saturnalia, that there was 110 period of the year wheuthey may relax or lay aside their religious duties. It had been found that in tile past the needs of the situation had scarcely, been met at all. He enumerated tlie various difficulties which had to be contended with in connection with the holding of services in the district embracing the seaside resorts of Plimmerton, Paremata,. and Titahi Bay, and said it iftis not to be thought of that the people visiting these and other resorts were to he allowed to go without spiritual help. Assistance was required; and that was tho object, of the setting up of the proposed committee. Mr, J. W. Henderson seconded tho motion. ._ ; Tho Rev. J. E. Jones objected to the motion. His experience was that very many of the visitors to Paekakariki at-, tended the church m his parish and were glad to get the services,. The motion on being put to the meeting was carried on the voices. Chinese Mission. On the motion of,, the Veil. Archdeacon Harper it was resolved"That this Synod commends the work of the mission amongst the Chinese residents in the provincial districts of Wellington and Hawke's Bay to churchy people as being worthy of wider recognition and greater, financial support." The report of the Wellington Chinese Mission was before the Synod. In this the superintendent (the Ven. Archdeacon Harper) said :—"Tho past year ■ has marked a now_ phase in the history of tho Chinese Mission. It is seven years since the Rev. D. "Wong was called to higher service above. During this time, for two short periods of six months each, tliero have been Chinese evangelists in charge of the mission; otherwise, till ■lately, the work has been, carried on by Mrs. Wong and the Chinese converts, in particular, Mr. Dye Chum and Mr. D. J. Kwoin. In August last Mr. Law arrived from Canton to act as inissioner,, so, that- once again there is a Chinese evangelist." The report went on to outline the work already undertaken by Mr. Law, and then proceeded:—"lt is the. opinion of those best qualified to judge tliat China will only be evangelised by the Chinese. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance that every Chinaman who returns home should be a missionary for the faith. Owing to the' restrictions now placed 011 the immigration of Chinese into New Zealand, the_ number of Chinamen resident _liere is, on the whole, steadily . diminishing. If, then, we wish so to influence them hero that they will 011 their roturn to China act as evangelists to their own people, we must concentrate our efforts on them now. For these reasons we do not hesitate to say that the Chinese Mission .is worthy of more support than it receives." ! The Synod also had before it the report (written in-Chinese) of Mr. Law, the missioner, and also printed copies of the translation. On the motion of Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, the Synod consented to'the Rev. A. M. Johnson, M.A;, and Messrs. W. F. Ward, J. W.. A. Marchant, E. H. Anderson, and R. B. Rigg being _ separately incorporated under the Religious Trusts Act as trustees of the St. Paul's Tina- 1 kori Road property. Consent- was also given to these gentlemen transferring the property to the new incorporated Trust- Board upon the Trusts affecting such property. The motion was brought forward for tho purpose of enabling the vestry to dispose of tho property or otherwise deal with it in the best interests of the parish of St. Paul's.
