« ; A SERIOUS OFFENCE BUYING LIQUOR FOR A SOLDIER Before Mr. D. G. ■ !Ai.' Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday a caso was heard, under the War Regulations Act in which an okl man named Patrick Twomey was charged that he > acted as the agent in purchasing liquor for the consumption of a soldier olf the premises of a hotel. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for the accused ,and put in a .plea of guilty, but said that there had been no guilty intention on accused's part. He did hot commit the act for gain, hut had simply acted as a "goodnatured fool" in making the purchase at the request of tho soldier he had met. i Inspector Hendrey pointed out that this was 'theithird offence in Wellington, and it. was well'known that liquor could not be purchased for soldiers for consumption off tho premises. A fine of £lo,\in default 14 days' imprisonment, was imposed.' • 'A LICENSING CASE. The licensee of the Duke of -Edinburgh Hotel (Richard Dwyer) was charged that on June 23 he permitted' drunkenness on his premises. Mr., M. Myers appeared ■for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. . The case for the police .was that a sergeant and a constable found a man. asleep in a private bar,;aud arrested him for drunkenness.-' The barmaid gave evidence that slio saw-the man come in, and she thought he was sick. She allowed him to sit 1 down, but'did not siipply him with liquor. His Worship said that he believed the barmaid thought the man was ill, and so allowed him to sit down. A man was employed to go-through the hotel every five.minutes to see that there''Was jio drunkenness, so she might reasonably have expected hip -along soon.' The information was dismissed. ILL-TREATING A HORSE. A charge of* ill-treating'a horse was brought by the £>.P.C.A., represented .by Mr: R. H. Webb, against, John Campbell (Mr. H. F, O'Leary). The case for the prosecution was that the horse had been worked with an open sore, of loug standing, on its back. For the defence it was contended that when the. horse was taken out. to work the •sore was not apparent, but it was not worked after Inspector Henry called the driver's attention to the sore. Evidence was given that defendant, who used a lot of horses, had a reputation for looking after his.. horses well. Defendant said he had driven horses for over 27 years,; and had never yet had a girth-galled horse. He had not had a case against him before. A conviction and a fine of &§, with costs £1 18s.) was imposed. . ''INSOBRIETY. . A large number of persons' appeared on charges of drunkenness, and were dealt with as under:—Chas. Mackin was fined 405., in default one month's imprisonment; Clifton Leslie M'Roberts and Geo. Broderick were each fined 10s., in dfefault 48, hours' imprisonment; Patrick O'Neilllwas fined 205., in default three days\ imprisonment j Patrick Sullivan, alias Holland, was fined. 10s., or 48 hours, for drunkenness, and fined 405., in default seven days', imprisonment,' for resisting iarrestj_ Adam M'Ewen was convicted aiid discharged for-drunkenness, aiuMned 605., in default one month's imprisonment, for using obsceno language; -Henry Gertson, for drunkenness, was convicted and discharged, and for obscene-language was fined 405., in-default 14 days' imprisonment, ■ Elizabeth-Musgrove,: an old offender,, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, for drunkenness, ■ and . three months' imprisonment for, escaping from tlie Salvation Army Home. She announced her intention running away from the home again if slie was sent back when she came out'of gaol. Seven first offenders were. dealt with in the ordinary way. ' OTHER CHARGES. Daniel Burke was 405., in default fourteen days' imprisonment, for committing an indecent act. Thps. Myers, a previous offender, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for theft of a pair of: boots, yalued at £12s. ' ..\ Frederick Warner and James Norton, for absenting themselves without leave from the s.'s. Kia Ora, wero both'convicted. Warner was sentenced to seven days'".-, imprisonment, and Norton wasordered to forfeit two days'pay. Norton was also remanded .to appear at Christohurch, on'' a charge that ho intended to leave .'the Dominion without making adequate provision for the maintenance of his stepson. Charles Gurote, who was over £30 in arrears in ai maintenance order, was sentenced to thirty-five' days' imprisonment, the order to be suspended on payment of 15s. per week, and 2s. 6d. per week off the arrears. LOWER HUTT COURT At the Lower Hutt Court yesterday, before Messrs. Chapman and ■ James, J.P.'s, two first offending inebriates were fined 10s. each, v in default 48 hours' imprisonment. A Native, named Joe Rawiri,'was charged with breaking and entering the residence of Francis Mansell on Saturday last, and stealing the sum of £2' 4s. 2d. -Accused was remanded till Monday next.
