OUR ARMY MEDICAL SERVICE
NEED FOR AN IMPERIAL OFFICER,
Speaking to a- reporter on Saturday on tho subject of the New Zealand Army Medical Service, the Minister of Defence (Hon. James Allen) said that it had been thought prior to the outbreak of the war that wo could manage our own medical service. Under the clamour for keeping Defenco expenses down this had been thought the better course, and no suggestion for anything different had been inado by liis predecessor. But immediately tho war broke out General Godley and ho both saw the necessity of having a man, and under his instruction a- qualified officer was secured for the Egyptian caiup. "I havo for some time past been of the opinion that we needed an experienced Royal Medical Corps man in Now Zealand, in view of tho work that is going on, and to train our own medical officers in this special work. We havo already cabled, asking the authorities urgently to send out a Royal Army Medical Corps officer, and though, as I say, the request was an urgent one, wo have not yet had any reply. lam afraid the demand upon their supply is great, and that they may not bo ablo to send us an officer."
