Theso clubs have now played 9 matches, of which Wellington has won 5, Canterbury 2, and two have ended in a tio, Canterbury's present win is the first, that they have scored from Wellington since 1887, and is therefore as popular as it is well deserved,' NGAIO CLUB. Th's Ngaio Chess Club's annual handicap tourney is rapidly approaching completion, and a very close finish is assured. The three leaders, Wild, Carman, and E. B. Hicks, have each scored 7 wine, 2 losses, and each has two games to play. Tho 'nest best tallies are: W. Hicksj 7 win's, 3 losses; Topp, 7—4; Brown, 5—5; and G-rcen, -i—s. The club has recently made a trek—the members now holding thoir weekly meetings in' the house of' Mr. J, Williams in Abbott Road. WELLINGTON,. SOUTH CLUB; This club's / annual handicap tourney was commenced on Thursday evening, there being. 15 competitors. In the opening round Purchas won from Douglas, Harper from Murray, jun., and Laughton from Perrott. The fixtures, Wolton v. Armstrong, Wei no v. Berry, Bland v. Thompson ,and Loney v. Murray, sen., are outstanding. Al Clark had the bye. \ WORKING MEN'S CLUB.;' A good start has been' made with' this club's annual handicap chess tourney. Mr. J. P. Key, the club's popular assis-tant-secretary, is leading with four clear wins to his credit. Messrs. Barnes (2 wins) and Burgess (l win) are also unbeaten while Messrs. Peake, J. Wilson, Larking, C. Reid, and Mowtell, each with' only one loss/are well to the fore. The regretted retirements of Messrs. Erickson; J. Reid, and G. Gray Teduce the number of competitors from 17 to 14. There' are eleven competitors in the club's annual sealed handicap draughts tourney in which J. Reid has so far made the very presentable score of IG-i points out of, a possible 20. Tho other competitors though not so advanced with their fixtures are playing steadily and well, inotably Messrs. C. Reid, W. H, Smith, Roberts, and Douglas.
