NOTES AND COMMENTS

[Br Glsncoe.l A heavy fall of rain has taken place oyer the whole of tho Hawke's Buy district, and though latest advices report tho weather fine, the going for the Napier races to-day ig sure to bo on the heavy side. Proceedings will commence with the Hack Hurdles, in which Hurakia (Flynn) is top-weight. Scrutineer, runnerup to the chestnut at Hastings, will be in tho market, as will.Forelight, who was unlucky enough to get left on the metropolitan course, and then finished in third place. Grey Renown will be at home with such a lot of jumping in the Hack Steeples, and so will Merry Lad, whose performance at Histings was meritorious. Fond .Memory, who scored on tho opening day at Hastings, finished up very sore ail round, and ho can hardly be at his best for to-day's race. Golden Water, another of the runners, cannot act in heavy going. Kirkby, who is one of tlie Birkenhead breed, can go well in the mud, and is a good jumper, but ho hangs badly, anil as a consequence tuiis over a lot of unnecessary ground. On his form at Ellerslio Hyettus will have many supporters for the big mile, but it must be remembered that he is on the small side, and is only a three-year-old, so that by the end of a mile his weight looks like beating him. He Is trying to give a year and 61b. to a very useful horse in Ardent, and it is worthy of note that the last-named was running on at the right end of bath his races at Hastings. Another horse likely to be well suited by the distance is Wild Lupin. Heather Mixture, too, now that he has struck form, may command respect. Oliver will have the ride on ( he imported horse, and there are those who declare that after his brilliant performance at Hastings, when ho came from rear of a strung-out field, nothing is beyond him. There are 21 fences to be jumped in the Napier Steeplechase, ithree mi\e3. Weight will beat the two top-weights, and Sandy Paul, who has been seasoned and is nicely treated with lOst. ilb., may be the best of tho othors. R. Gray 'is to have the mount on Leapuki, and it will bo interesting to see if he can keep the erratic Letho gelding on tho course. Itcd Book and St. Elmn will be much sought after for the Bracelet, in which Hymettius has 12st. 41b., la very big weight for a, three-year-old. The facit that he is a good mud horse will gain support for Kew in the Open Hurdles, but want of a race might defeat him. Aratiatia will be much liked, but Sam Pan, who is now back to his best form, and acts well in tho mud, may bring about the defeat of the Porirua horse. There is a big field in the Settlers' Hack Handicap, but after seeing Mandoline score so decisively at Hastings, the ICaramu filly is oßi'tain. to have many supporters. A horse known as Who's On It broke his neck when contesting a hurdle race at the recent Port Adelaide meeting. The name was enough to kill him.

The most prominent surface-marking on Mars is called "Kaiser Sea."
