THE ZOO
Letters of thanks are to be forwarded by the City Council to several persons for their donations to the Zoo. The donations are: One pair of tuatara lizards, Captain Bollons; four guinea pigs, Mr. D. Pritchard, Heat-on Road, Mitchelltown; king parrot, Mrs. Thyberg; 54 Cambridge Terrace; giant petne, Mr. J. Brabey, Te Horo. The Reserves Committee reported to the council last night that they had received an offer from Messrs. F. Cooper, Ltd., to plant a 50 feet diameter bed of native shrubs, preferably in the Zoo grounds. The offer has been referred to a sub-committee for report. The committee also reported having received an intimation from the Wellington Zoological Society that Messrs. Hortion' and Sons, af Pahiatua and Hastings, liad prtsented 50 seJected roses for planting in the Zoo grounds. Tliis matter has also been referred to a sub-committee to deal with. A site in the Zoo grounds has been reserved for the formation of a rosery to the southward of the present waders' aviary. This year's cost will not exceed £50, and the Rose and Carnation Club undertake to plant and maintain the rosery.
British soldiers and sailors on sick furlough or discharged medically unfit in case of need receive temporary assistance from the National Relief Fund. On Sunday a tablet to the memory of Sir William Russell will be unveiled in St. Matthew's Church,.Hastings.
