THE FREIGHT CAR

RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE. The Tramways Committee of the City Council reported at last night's meeting that they had given consideration to the question of the freight services carried out by the Tramways Department, and that they were of opinion that this service should be maintained on tho basis of providing for the carriage of parcels and luggage for the convenieuce of citizens, but not for the carriage of goods in bulk. They forwarded a statement of receipts and expenditure on freight service account for the year ended March 31, 1915. The figures were as follow, the corresponding figures for the previous twelve months being shown in parentheses: — Receipts—£7l3 9s. (£540 10s. 4d). Expenditure—Working expenses at lOd. por car mile, £512 Bs. 4d. (£5lO Is. 8d.); miscellaneous freight-car expenses, £100 ss. lOd. (£'s9 14k. 9d.); total, £642 14s. 2d. (£569 16s. 3d). Less value of departmental services rendered, £221 (£221); leaving net total of £421 lis. 2d. (£348 16s. sd). Credit balance—£29l 14s. lOd. (£l9l 13s. lid). Car miles ?un —13,01S miles (12,242 miles). Tho report was adopted after brief discussion, the council approving the recommendation to maintain the service on the basis of providing for tho carriage of parcels and luggage.
