ONSLOW BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Onslow Borough Council met in committee last night to consider the estimates and rates for tie year. The Mayor (Mr. C. C. Crump) presided, and all councillors -were present with the exception of Councillor Smith, who is laid up with illness. The estimates as passed included no very important new works, and concerned in the main the improvement of parious roads in the borough. A sum of £60 was set aside for the erection of a new fire brigade shed at Kaiwarra. The general rate was left the same as last year (2 l-Bd. in the £)■ The Hospital and Charitable Aid rate was raised from 10-64 d. in the £ to 12-64 d. in the £, this on account of the increase in the levy. The works loan rate, was raised slightly, from 13-4 d in the £ to 14-64 d.

Mr. Thomas F. Hart, assistant subeditor of the "Otago Daily Times," has received official notification *" a t 1118 son, Corporal Horace A. Hart, has been killed in action. Corporal Hart, wjo was a member of the old Ballarat (Victoria) Battalion, was one of the first m "nis native city to enlist as 8 pmato. He was promoted in camp to lance-cor-poral, and on shipboard to .corporal. Tho deceased, who was unmarried, wai twenty-six years old.
