DELAYED BY THE WAR
TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH APPARATUS. By Telegraph— Press Association. Christohuroh, Juno 22. In conversation with a reporter today regarding the work of his Department, with special reference to the effect of tlio war upon orders for material, the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, Postmaster-General, said that not only was the war delaying tho delivery of automatic telephone apparatus for Auckland and Wellington and several of the smaller places where improved serriccs were urgently needed, hut it was delaying the installation of the Murray multiplex printing telegraph apparatus, and this immediately conr cerned Christohuroh, for two quadruples sets had been under order for somo months—on© for tho WellingtonChristehurch and the other for tho Wellington-Auckland circuit. Tho apparatus would, it was confidently expected, enormously increase the carrying capacity of those circuits enabling eight messages (four forwarded and four received) to bo sent over a single wire simultaneously, and so lessen tho cost of transmission. Mr. Rhodes mentioned that- ho had recently received a lqttcr from.,Mr, .Murray, dated London, April 23, which showed the great difficulty he was experiencing in getting his work done.
It is stated that the_ slump in ostrich feathers in South Africa mil be moro than compensated by the increase of . naMJo-raisias and the export of fruits
