A DANGEROUS STRUCTURE RIMUTAKA ROAD BRIDGE IN NEED ■ OF REPAIRS. The Abbotts Creek Bridge, at the foot of the Rimutakas, on the main road to Featherston, is stated to be in need of immediate attention. The Wairarapa Automobile Association has received tho following report on tho state of the bridgo from Mr. H. F. Toogood, C.E.: — "lu accordance with your instructions, [ have, inspected the above bridge. I find that the stringers show evidence of severe over-loading, which if continued much longer will cause the failure of the bridgo. One stringer has been stressed beyond its clastic limit, and tho extreme fibres of the timber have already broken down.- One of the cross bearers which carry the stringers also shows similar ovor-stressing. I would advise that traffic heavier than U tons, distributed in two axles, be stopped until the bridge is strengthened. Horse-drawn traffic, owing to the great oscilitation caused thereby, should not bo permitted on any account, unless the cylinder piers on which the bridge is founded are adequately braced and deeper stringers put in. "The foundations of the cylinders where exposed to view are defective. The up-stream oylinder remote from Featherston is badly undermined. I was able to put a stick 10 inches under the foundation, and if the shingle is properly cleaned out a further cavity might be exposed. This cylinder needs immediate attention. The other cylinders, which by reason of being exposed I was able to inspect, will also require attention, but at present their condition is not alarming. Four of the cylinders artburied in heavy shingle, and I was unable to ascertain tho condition of their foundations. However, with 3or 4 feet of shingle around them, I would consider them safe. To strengthen tho bridgo to accommodate heavy motor wagons, two additional rows of stringers are required. They should be 14in. by 6in., placed so as to bear almost directly on the cylinder. This will relieve the load on the two-inch decking, and also the load on the bearers carrying tho stringers. The approaches are difficult, and damage is done to the wheelguards by cars being unable to approach tho bridge in a straight direction. "The bridge being only Bft. wide, at .least 10 feet of straight should be provided. On the Wellington eide this can be done very easily, but on the Featherston side a little cutting and filling will be necessary. Unless the approaches are altered the wheel-guards will always be under repair. "The bearing of the end span on tho Featherston side is defective, and if now stringers are put in they should be at least 3 feet lunger for this span than the existing stringers, so as to give a better bearing on the land abutment. The cost of the work outlined is as follows: —Two additional stringers, Kin. by Girt., in jarrah: 14in. by Gin. stringers total 110 ft., equals 770 super feet at £2, equals £15 Bs.; 8 corbel, 6in. by 6in. by 3ft.. equals 72 super feet at- £2, equals £1 10s.; 32 bolts, }ui. by Ift. Gin., equals 751b. at "id., equals £1 os.; 16 bolts, 5-S by Ift. 2in., equals 25 lb. at 4d., equals Bs.; struting, 120 ft. by 3in. bv 2in. (totara), equals 60 super font at .CI, equals 125.; cartage, £1; labour 3 men, 5 days at 125., £9; contingencies, 175.: restoring foundation and improving the approaches, lump sum, £15. Total, £45."
