RUTT-WAIKANAE ROAD
ITS COMPLETION URGED. A deputation, introduced by Messrs. W. H. I'ield, T. it. Willord, and li. A. Wright, M.l'.'s, and consisting of members of tho Hutfc County Council, Mr. Seed, secretary of the -'day Morn Estates, Mr. representing stuck salesmen, and Air. C. Odlin, representing tho settlers of tho Upper HultWaikanae district, wailed upon tlio .Minister of Public \Yorks (.tne Hon. W ■ I'iaser) yesterday. The object ol the deputation was to ask the .Minister ui provide certain urgently-needed grants within the llutt- County, but in particular a grant of .£3OOO to compleio the formation of the Upper llutt-\Vai-kanae Road. It was pointed out by Mr. h'ieid that many thousands of pounds had been spent on the formati-.m ol the road, which formed a timcli-necded direct communication from the Wairarapa and Hutt Valley to the Muiiawatu side, and until the length still remaining to be completed, about three miles, was constructed, the money spent hitherto was of camparatively little u.se, as the essence ol Hie matter was that the road was a through road. Mr. Wilford drew attention to tho absurdity of doing important work piecemeal, and Messrs. Howell and Galloway, of the l-lutt Council, pointed out that, a formed road on which there was little or no trallic often cost more to maintain than a road which was used. Tho Minister, in reply, said that the Government could not provide money for metalling,, but tiiey would do all that was reasonably possible to assist in tho construction of the balance of the road, though lie could not, without having all tho grants for applications before him, m-ako any definite promise as to the amount.
