AURORA AUSTRALIS
OF SURPASSING GRANDEUR. (By Telograph—SueeJal Correspondent.) Masterton, June 17. A remarkable luminous phenomenon was witnessed on the southern horizon this evening. Many people thought a huge lire was raging somewhere in the south, but the phenomenon developed into a scene of surpassing grandeur, a luminous aroh extended over the whole canopy, rays of light of various colours shooting, into the sky,- and cteating a magnificent effect. The display lasted for several hours, and was one" of the first auroral manifestations ever witnessed' from these parts. A brilliant red light was observed in the sky by residents of Miramar and other seaside districts last night. Tho light was high up in the sky to tho south, and there was a clear space of bright bluo below. The whole was crosscd by bright silver rays extending to tho horizon, and in general presented the characteristics of the atmospheric' phenomenon known as the Aurora Ausiralis. ■
