Owing to tho slackness in trade, states the Auckland "lierold," the Northern Company has decided to lay up two more of its steamers, namely, tne l'aeroa and Waiotahi. The i'aeroa was removed to an anchorage in the stream at Auckland some das' 6 ago, and the Waiotahi followed the smaller vessel yesterday. A crew was to be signed on tho Hauroto at Auckland yesterday. As tha repairs to the vessel have been almost completed, she will probably sail for Sydney and Hong-Kong about the end of tho week. With the exception of the main royal yard, all the spars have been placed aloft oil the Norwegian barque Gte, which has boen at anchor in Auckland llarbour since March- It is expected that the vessel will clear for Glasgow early next week. The barque Louisa Craig is at present completing her loading of bark, gypsum, and ealt at Editliburg, South Australia, for Auckland, states an Auckland paper. She will theu go to South Australian ports to load for Bluff, Oamaru, and Timaru. . The Whangapc arrived at Melbourne ou Saturday from Muff, and after discharging .hor cargo of produce she will load at Newcastle for Dunedin and Oaiuaru. The Government lighthouse lender Hinemoa left Port Chalmers on Monday in continuation of her cruise t-o the southern lighthouses and West Coast Sounds. While discharging operations on tho collier Karori were in pi-ogress at the King's Wharf at Auckland on Monday the main top-mast buckled at the cap, under tho weight of coal baskets. This loosened one of the top derricks, but fortunately none of the gear fell to the dock. The fumigation of mails and fruit which arrive at Auckland from outside countries, states the "Star," is effected in three wooden buildings at the shore end of Hobson Wharf. These are about to be floated round to the Railway Wharf for reerection near the eitc of the Government's oyster depot. A good deal of clearing up has boen done of late as part of the scheme for the extension of Quay Street West, and the thoroughfares leading to lfobson Wharf are rapidly improving.
