THE CARNIVAL.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The thanks of the community are surely due to Archdeacon Harper for his fearless letter. If a stranger from another sphere Were to appear in Wellington, he would naturally inquire iv'hat joyous event was being celebrated. What would he think when told of the long lists of our wounded and dead which are daily appearing in the papers P You, sir, say Napoleon laid more stress on the spiritual than on the material side of the nation. Are we encouraging the spiritual side with our Sunday concerts, races, tango teas, dances, girl 6 masquerading as men, etc? ' Imagine the effect of all this upon our young people, who, instead of being taught solf-sacriiice, think they can only help a good cause by having lots of "fun and frolic." One of your correspondents says: ''To encourage people to be dreadfully serious might easily induce a dangerous state of despondency." Ido not think—judging from what is going on —there is tho smallest l'ear of that. But despondency is surely very different from a thoughtful seriousness, when our loved ones are sacrificing their lives, so that not only we, but all the world, may bo free. I know there is a very deep feeling of tender sympathy amongst many, but it is scarcely seemly just now that there should be sucli a mad rush for pleasure, ovon though tho motive be good. The end does not justirv the means. —I am, etc., ANOTHER MOTHER. ,
