THE ALLIES' TASK IN GALLIPOLI
POSITION STEADILY IMPROVING COLONIALS HOLD IMPREGNABLE POSITION (Rec. June 1, 7.30 p.m.) London, June 14. The "Daily Chronicle's" Athens correspondent states that the latest news from tie Dardanelles shows that the Allies' position continues materially to improve. The Turks still occupy Krithia, and its ruined Tillage, offering strong opposition. The Australians and New Zealanders hold impregnable positions dominating Maidos and Kilid Bahr. Feeling against Germany is steadily rising in Constantinople, and even the Germans recognise the hopelessness of their efforts. An early peace alone will save Turkey. OPERATIONS OF THE FRENCH DIVISION COUP-DE-MAIN SUCCESSFULLY EFFECTED. Paris, June 14. Official: The operations at the Dardanelles were modified during the last fortnight in May. General attacks have given place to slower progression, carefully prepared and methodically oarried out. The French efforts have been concentrated around a series of entrenchments which the Turks hollowed out in front of a ravine called Kereve Dere. A colonial regiment on May 28 was ordered to storm a little fort at the extreme left of the Turkish line. The foreground was swept by rifle firo and machine-guns. _As a normal attack would have demanded enormous sacrifices, a coup de main was therefore planned. A seotion composed of 34 Europeans and 42 Senegalese was ordered to steal out at night singly from the trenches, crawl forward, and when concentrated to huri themselves without firihjr a shot. The party at midnight crawled within forty metres, and then charged. Shouting, they leapt the parapet. The Turks were surprised, and discharged their rifles and then fled. The fort was captured.
