STEAMER SERVICE WITH JAPAN
DEFINITELY ABANDONED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, Juno 14. Colonel the Hon. James Burns, one of the principals of the Burns, Philp Shipping Co., who is a passenger on the Makura en route to London, states that the proposal that his company, in conjunction, with the Nippon Yusen Kaislia, should establish a line of steamers trading between. Japan and lasia has definitely fallen through, owing to the lack of steamers and the high freights offering in other directions. The trade, however, is steadily increasing between Japan and theso .Dominions, and a new service would without doubt eventually be established. Colonel Burns thought the steamers would include the Philippines and Fiji in their itinerary.
