WAIKANAE RIVER MOUTH.

FACILITIES FOR FISHERMEN. For many years past there has been a fishing station at the mouth of the Waikanao River, the fishermen mainly carrying on operations in the vicinity <jf the Islajid of Kapiti. There is at this locality an excellent supply of fish all tho year round, but particularly in the warehou season. The fishermen have, however, been hampered very considerably by difficulties of access to market, and the want of a reserve upon which to build their huts, dry nets, house the boats, etc. Recently, the Hutt County Council communicated with Mr. W. H. Field. M.P., on the matter, and the latter has been giving it his attention, with the result that a visit is likely to be made by an ofiiccr of the Marine Department and Mr. Field, to the locality at an early date, with a view to attending to the demands of tho fishermen. and also adjusting difliculties which have arisen between them and tho settlers who own the land fronting the river mouth and the sea. At the same time. Mr. Field has strongly advised the Hiitt County Council that tho old Native roads which have lod from the mouth of the Waikanae River to Paraparaumu, Otaihanga, and Waikanae from time immemorial were in reality public, roads, and should, where necessary, be thrown open to tho puhlic. In cases whore settlers had provided alternative roads, those, of course, should be accepted in lieu of the original tracks, but the district badly wanted road facilities, and he suggested that the. council had full_ powers to moot tho public convcnionre in this respect. As the result of these stops, the fishermen and the. settlers at the mouth of the Waikanao River are likely to he much more conveniently situated in the future than they have been in the past.
