The Germans have effected another crossing of the Dniester—a new move in the Bilkowina region. Heavy fighting has recommenced on the Bzura, in Central Poland. In the Austro-Italian theatre big operations are in progress, with heavy fighting. The attack on the Austrian fortified position at Gorizia has opened auspiciously for the Italians. The crossing of the Isonzo was marked by a thrilling incident, in which an Italian colonel showed conspicuous gallantry at a. critical moment. The visit of an Italian dirigible to the great Austrian naval base at Pola was at- • tended with destructive results to the. arsenal. In the Western theatre the immense importance of the recent French successes north of Arras—achieved at a terrible cost in life—is now disclosed; the Germans have lost their strongest defensive position in North Prance. There is nothing new, of material import, from the Dardanelles. The location of what is believed to be a German submarine base on the i coast of Asia Minor—access to which is impossible for large craft—is reported. The call for munitions for the Allies has resulted in a stoppage of the enlistments on the Clyde—the men are wanted for a more pressing work in the arsenals. The expert workers who were caught up in the general mobilisation of the French troops for tho front are now to be reorganised for the munitions factories, while it is reported that the resources of the great Bethlehem Steel Works in America, have been placed at the disposal of the French Government, In Australia two big companies are arranging to manufacture shell cases for the British Army, and these, it is hoped, will- be in use before Christmas.
