CARNIVAL QUEENS' BRESSES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Can you or any of your readers inform me as to the truth of the report that the cost of tho Carnival Queen's dresses is to be defrayed out of the fund t-o which the public is so generously subscribing on the understanding that the' money is for the benefit of the sick and wounded soldiers and the dependents of the killed? Rumour has it that the dresses are to cost anything in the region of £20 .each, wHch makes an astounding total of £300. If it is not so I would suggest that the executive give it a public denial, and if it is so 1 would suggest that the subscribers of the fund enter' an emphatic protest against such an absurd and wicked outlay of the money so urgently needed for a noble purpose. There are 15 Queen candidates, but not one of their committees has the moral right to waste public money.—l am, etc., COMMON SENSE. [The secretary of the New Zealand Patriotic Society (Mr. J. Lewis) states that the assumptions in the above letter are incorrect. Tho only dress that the Patriotic Society is to pay for will be that to be worn by the lady who is elected Queen. Tho dresses of the other candidates are to he supplied by the respective committees.]
