NATIVE LAND SETTLEMENT
HON. W. H. HERRIES AT TAUMARUNUI. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Taumarunui, June 11. Tho Hon. W. H. Herries addressed a meeting of Taumarunui electors at Taumarunui this evening. The Mayor, Mr. Steadman, presided. Mr. Herries regretted. that tho Leader of the Opposition should have so far departed the courtesies of political life as to address a meeting on the night when a Cabinet Minister had previously arranged to speak. He dealt with the question of the purchase of Native townships, and said the_ Government policy would not compel Natives to sell, but would purchase from them with their consent. He had met the Taumarunui Natives, •who had expressed willingness to sell, and the Government had already taken steps to purchase the Natives' interests in the town. He detailed the large ex- ■ penditure made by. the present Government on roads and other development. Both _ by-elections since the . General Election had, he said, shown the popular verdiot in favour of the Government. He deprecated a coalition, which had never been really successful, and urged the electors to return Mr. Wilson so as to give the Government a good working majority. He claimed that in circumstances of unprecedented difficulty the Government had successfully steered the country to a sound and stable condition of things, and explained the measures taken. They were genuine freeholders, and their ideal was one of small proprietors and general prosperity. Their Native land legislation was Saving the effect of unlocking blocks of land tied up in Land Boards by previous Governments, and they proposed to pass on the freehold of these to bona-fide farmers.
