PUBLIC WORKS
■ ♦ MINISTER CORRECTS A MIS-STATE-MENT. A statement is being circulated by opponents of the Government, more especially in the Taumaruimi electorate, that the Government are putting men off public works needlessly. This statement was referred to the Minister of Public Works yesterday. Mr. Eraser said that it was absolutely incorrect. "It is true," he said, "that where a vote lias been exhausted, and where the people interested have wished 1110 to go on spending beyond the amount of the vote, .1 have declined to do so, but men havo not been put off works so long as thorn was money available. In some eases the vote will even bo exceeded, but those are all urgent works, for which very little beyond the amount of the, voto is required for completion. I cannot, spend more money on a road than Parliament votes, otherwise I would be short of money on other works authorised. Tlie amount of money actually voted is equivalent to the. amount of money at our disposal, and if we spend too much on one work, some other work, either in the or elsewhere, must go short. The best proof that public works are not being held up is in the fact that I have spent, more money -m. rendr. during Hte Wist jyar ttwi ever «| jjesfc Iwforsi - y
