CONTINUED SUCCESS OF THE FRENCH OFFENSIVE
( THE ASSAULT ON "THE "LABYRINTH" SEVERE FIGHTING AT THE HEBUTERNE . (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright:.) ♦ Paris, Jun# 8. A communique states: "The enemy made three violent, but ineffective, oounter-attacks on the slope east of the plateau of Lorette. "We have made further progress at the Labyrinth. "The Germans were repulse<l four times in attempts to retake a position at Hebuterne. We captured two lines of trenches along a 550 yards front, as far as the road from Hebuterne to Soree, and 150 prisoners. The British exploded a mine in the region of Ploegstoert Wood. Both the eneijiy's front and rear trench were blown up for thirty yards. (Rec. June 9, 11.-10 p.m.) Paris, June 9. Official.—"We have carried the whole of the western island at Neuvelle St. Vaast, and in addition more houses in the principal street, or northern island. "We have retained our gains at Hebuterne', despite a strong attack by two German battalions, hastily brought np by automobiles from Arras. We have advanced our eastward front by 1200 metres (1500 yards)." i ■ , NO CHANGE ON THE BRITISH FRONT TWO AEROPLANES BROUGHT DOWN. (Rec. June 9, 11.40 p.m.) London, June 9. Sir John French reports that since June 4 the situation has been unchanged on the British front. There is less artillery activity. The British brought down two German aeroplanes, one bv gunfire and the other after a duel "with a British machine in the air. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The High Commissioner reports:— London, June 8, 4:50 p.m. "Last night, north of Arras, infantry actions developed on the slopes of the plateau Notre Dame Do Lorette. The enemy thrice violontly counterattacked, but the positions were not changed. "North-east of Souchez Refinery the French ha,ve progressed. At NeuvilleSaint Vaast they carried a fresh group of houses after a very violent combat. "In the region of the "Labyrinth" a - German counter-attack was repulsed. ' ... "South-east of Hebuterne the enemy tried to regain positions lost, being fcur timeß repulsed. The French enlarged their gains to the north-east, taking two lines of trenches on a front of five hundred metres (over COO yards) and capturing 500 prisoners (100 wounded)." A SURVEY OF THE FRENCH OPERATIONS ADVANCE OVER NETWORK OF GERMAN DEFENCES. ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) (Rec. Juno 9, 6.30 p.m.) London, Juno 9. The "Times's" correspondent in North France writes: "While the British, French, and Belgians have been firmly holding tlio enemy in check in Flanders, the French have been battering his lines at Artois. For weeks they have been fiercely fighting their way to. Lens and Vimy, and aro still heroically advancing. Every yard of (lie advance is strongly fortified, and stubbornly defended,, but the French arc driving tho enemy out of position after position with bombs and bayonet. The ground gained is strewn with German bodies. There has been no time to bury tliosp, and the stench is unbearable to French nostrils. "The enemy is offering a stout resistance. _ They know that an important, perhaps vital, point in their lino of communications is seriously threatened, and the Amy under Prince Ruppreclifc of Bavaria lias been strongly reinforced by their finest troops in a frantic effort to stay the French advance. "The 'French are making secure their newly-acquired positions, preparatory to an. advance further south. Tho French are covering themselves with glory in furious hand-to-hand encoiuuers at Ncuville-St. Vaast, and in the "Labyrinth." driving the enemy out, house by house. "The 'Labyrinth' is a vast area of trenches, open and covered, and the warfaro is practically subterranean. The French displayed special aptitude and astonishing skill and daring in taking a network of wire entanglements. Two-thirds of 'the 'Labyrinth' is in thoir hands, and ths lina of thu oul«r fcucos at Vimv must won fall."
