KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL
♦ At last night's meeting of the Karori Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. B. G. H. Burn) presided, ana there were also present: Councillors A. Hamilton, L. P. Davies, W. Skegg, J. W. Henderson, It. T. Pell, T. W. Lewer, W. C. Cooper, It. Faire, and J. G. Raine. In reference to the proposed rifla range in the borough a letter was received from Defence Headquarters, objecting to the mounds being erected on the longer range, as it had been reported upon as unsafo. Tho letter suggested that the shorter range of the two be used as a practice range for rifle club men, and that 400 yards and 600 yards mounds only be erected. 'It was resolved that the correspondence be handed to Councillor Skemj in order that he might consult rile club men on the question. The correspondence is to be returned at the next meeting of the council. Mrs. Uosking, president of the Society for tho Health of Women and Children, wrote acknowledging the receipt of tramway pass granted to the I'lunket Nurses. The letter was received. A further letter wa& received from the Karori Golf Club in reference to the overcrowding of trams on Saturday afternoons, and the lack of conveyanco on lliose days. The club considered thtb the council had offered no assist* anoe in the matter. The Mayor expressed the opinion that the only course open to the club was to arrange for a special tram on such days as they required it. Councillors generally agreed with this view, and no action was taken in regard to the letter. Mr. M. Cable, assistant manager of the City Tramways, wrote stating that he anticipated that the six-return-trip workers' tickets would he delivered by the printer on June 9, and asked that arrangements should be made to place them on sale immediately, so that the new system might be brought into force on Monday, June 1-1. Tho Town Clork reported that he was making arrangements in accordance with Mr. Cable's Tequcst, and this action was approved. The Borough Engineer reported that at Karori Park the croquet lawns had recently been top-dressed. Soveral wattle tree plants, received from the Hon. C. J. Johnston, had been planted in tho park along the creek between the east and west sides of tile ground. On May 20, a letter appeared in a local newspaper protesting against what tho writer described as "the senseless action of the Karori Borough Council" in periodically burning off all green vegetation on the lofty and perpendicukir cliffs on the Karori side of the Kaiwarra stream, opposite Northland and C'reswick. Reporting on this matter at la6t night's meeting, the Borough Engineer said; "I wish to state that no fires are lighted by tho men employed under the council, except in the case of noxious weeds, which have been cut down. These fires are always under control. . . . Til the ease referred to, tho fire was evidently started by some irresponsible person, nnd the roadman (Mr. Casey) had the greatest difficulty in trying to arrest the flames, and to stop the (ire from destroying tho motor garage at the lop of the steps leading to Stirling Terrace." Tho report was adopted.
